The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline. (Prov. 1:7)

DisciplineI am a Christian - that is I believe in God and try to understand His will as expressed in the Bible, and to follow His ways in all aspects of our life. I am striving to raise my children in 'the fear of the Lord' |
He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him. (Prov 13:24) Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die. Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death. (Prov 23:13-14) The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother. (Prov 29:15) Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid. (Prov 12:11) Discipline your son, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to his death. (Prov 19:18) Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul. (Prov 29:17) |

EducationWe as a family are homeschooling our children - teaching them at home instead of sending them to school. We do this mainly because we want to ensure that they are trained in God's ways, rather than in worldly pursuits. I believe home-schooling is one possibility of providing children with the education, whenever and wherever possible and fruitful. A small church run school is another possibility. In any case, parents must be able to exercise more influence on what is being taught at school and for sound Christian values to be passed on to the pupils. A large secular school with a high children-to-teacher ratio and little parental control is not suitable for raising good Christians. In particular, I feel that our children should be taught things consistently. It is damaging to them and to us if we need to oppose the teaching that is provided at school, correct the ways in which our children are learning them and deny what their learn in classes. How can we insist on the obedience to teachers and us parents and on the discipline if both groups teach the children the opposite? Is this not creating 'half-truth'? |
Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. Remember the day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, when he said to me, "Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn to revere me as long as they live in the land and may teach them to their children." (Dt 4:9-10) These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. (Dt 6:7) Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. (Dt 11:18) Simply let your `Yes' be `Yes,' and your`No,' `No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. (Mt 5:37) But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not "Yes" and "No." For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by me and Silas and Timothy, was not "Yes" and "No," but in him it has always been "Yes." For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ. (2 Co 1:18-19) |

ScienceFinally, I believe that the current science and education is largely void of God - even more - it is anti-God. Yet, it does not need to be the case. Regardless of what is our precise stand on many issues that tear apart modern science and Christianity, we as scientists can admire God's creation and strive to learn more about it and about its Creator. The search for God's image in His creation is, however, fruitless if not driven by love towards God and other people. The knowledge needs to be gathered with a view to serve and to help other people.

How many are your works, O LORD! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him. Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to him a new song; play skilfully, and shout for joy. For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does. The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deep into storehouses. Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you. (Ps 33:1-9, 20:22) |
